Ah Lakeview – such a fascinating mix of people and places. From bustling Clark Street and the excitement of an event at Wrigley Field- home of the ever-popular Chicago Cubs, to shopping and dining along the Southport Corridor. From one of the county’s largest annual PRIDE Parades in Boystown, to some of the City’s most highly-rated elementary schools.  Lakeview is a study in the peaceful coexistence of contrast.

The neighborhood is so large and diverse that it divides itself into East and West Lakeview, with Boystown and Wrigleyville in between the two. Also crossing east-west lines is The Belmont Theatre District comprises 30 (or more?) theatres ranging from The Annoyance (home of the infamous Co-Ed Prison Sluts) to Briar Street (home of the famous Blue Man Group).  Learn more here: Belmont Theatre District

Lakeview East comprises the crowded, frenetic commercial districts along Clark and Broadway, as well as a stretch of Lincoln Park along the lakefront, including Belmont Harbor, home of several Yacht Clubs. Housing is primarily historic multifamily walk ups, or low and mid-rise elevator buildings constructed in the 60s and 70s. Residential side streets are charming. Tree-lined and narrow, barely wide enough for 2 cars to pass, many are one-ways. Lake breezes keep residents cool in the summer, and City busses provide transportation to get downtown.

Between East and West are Boystown and Wrigleyville, each known for its most famous residents, and both welcoming to all.

In Wrigleyville, other than “just” the Cubs, (who are in the midst of an enormous renovation project, more about that here: What's Going on at Wrigley Field ) you can visit Alta Vista Terrace, a group of 40 homes built around the turn of the century to resemble a street in Europe. An added curiosity is that each home matches the home diagonally opposite of it. For more information check here: The Alta Vista Terrace District.  Or, if your interests lie in cemeteries, both Wunders and Graceland are just north of Wrigley Field. Both are home to the graves of famous Chicagoans.  If you’re looking for a particular someone interred at Wunders you can start your search here: Wunders - Find A Grave Directory. You won’t find your search so easy at Graceland, but you can find a map of famous gravesites and a form to request genealogy information at the Cemetery webpage:  Graceland Cemetery

Boystown is one of the largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities in the United States. The annual PRIDE Parade and Halsted Market Days are the community’s celebrations of excess that take place every summer, joined in by everyone from the Mayor and the Governor to assorted out-of-town visitors.

When Second City visited Lakeview this is what happened:  Lakeview - BEYOND THE LOOP

West Lakeview is home to the Southport Corridor, known for boutiques and high-end shops, several brown line L stops, and primarily single family homes with multi-unit buildings scattered in between.  The Southport Corridor has its own blog, which you can find here:  Southport Corridor Blog.
