North Center is a quieter section of the city, but it surely doesn't lack culture and character. European influence remains intact in the residential areas, as well as, the family-run, small business scene.
North Center is mostly within zip code 60618 but also includes parts of 60657 and 60613. It is located between the neighborhoods of Lakeview and Avondale, East of I-90, north of Diversey Parkway and south of Montrose Avenue. Roscoe Village, St. Ben's, Bricktown, and Hamlin Park are all micro-neighborhoods within North Center.
Roscoe Village prides itself in being the "Village within the City," and for hosting the 3rd largest street festival in Chicago, "Retro on Roscoe." This tight-knit community offers nearly everything you need within its limits from a variety of ethnic restaurants, boutiques, salons, furniture, and clothing stores.
St. Ben's, short for Saint Benedict's Parish, was originally inhabited by German immigrants who needed another location for their school due to their growing population. It is bound with Irving Park Road to the north, Addison Street to the south, Damen Avenue to the east, and Western Ave. The elegant, Victorian style homes are attractive to families while condominiums and lofts have brought some modern features to the area. BenFest is this area's 2-Day family fun, street fest.
Bricktown earned its name because of the profitable clay along the riverbanks of Northcenter. Clay pits and brickyards became life as immigrants were displaced after the infamous Chicago Fire. The city was rebuilt with non-wood housing materials easily accessible with the train tracks. Well known, Lane Tech College Prep, is built over the old industrial brick site.
Hamlin Park neighborhood is, as you guessed, is a neighborhood focused around a large park ( 8 acres) full of fitness activities. It's bounded by Belmont Avenue on the north, Ravenswood Avenue on the east, the Diversey Parkway on the south and the North Branch of the Chicago River on the west.
Some highlights include two gyms, an outdoor pool, baseball fields, a combo football soccer field, clubrooms to rent, yoga classes - something for everyone - even a dog park. Some activities are free and others pay to play.
The most popular intersection of North Center (the Lincoln Ave, Damen Ave, Irving Park Rd asterisk) is easily accessible by the CTA Brown line from downtown. The Brown line also stops at Addison and Montrose. Other areas are fully serviced by CTA buses and Divvy bike sharing stations. Those traveling to the suburbs find quick access to the interstate highway I-90. Most areas of North Center have easy street parking without city zoning limitations.
For attractions, think the best of suburban life combined with the best of city living. North Center isn't as cramped as other parts of the city, allowing for many family-friendly and other activities.
International sports are heavily followed in this area, with plentiful bars around for viewing them. The Globe Pub, is a British bar which features soccer on the many TV's. Plan to get there at least an hour early if you want a table for a big game, or any game really, despite the early hours!
If you prefer to be outdoors, North Center features Ribfest in early June every year. This fest features a best-tasting rib competition among local restaurant vendors where the public votes for their favorite, a rib-eating competition, and other unique food items such as Guinness flavored ice cream, chocolate covered bacon, and gelato doughnut sandwiches. There's no questioning why this fest was featured on the Food Network and USA Today.
The North Center neighborhood often gets left out when Chicagoans think of their weekend brunch plans, but no longer! Reclaimed Bar and Restuarant has helped return this neighborhood to the competitive brunch (and dinner) scene by combining their southern comfort foods with Italian homestyle personalities and Spanish intricacy - eclectic in its creation yet so smooth in its delivery.
Chicago River Canoe and Kayak is located on the North Branch of the Chicago River behind Lane Tech. It's a great way to connect with nature and see the city with a different perspective. You might be surprised with the varieties of birds and animals that inhabit the river.
